Tuesday has been designated as a National Holiday in Paraguay following the football team’s dramatic win over four-time champions, Germany, in the World Cup to advance to the round of 16 on Monday.
The South American qualifiers defeated their European rivals 4-3 on penalties in a nail-biting climax to a thrilling game in Houston after both teams played out a 1-1 regulation and extra-time.
Following the win, President Santiago Peña released a statement declaring the national day off in Honour of the team’s achievement at the tournament against the odds.

The result, of course, has been one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 tournament, with Germany being the first major casualty of the knockout round.
