Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce and Lionel Messi have been named the 2022 Laureus’ Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.

The Five-time 100m World Champion and the 2022 World Cup winner were officially confirmed as awardees via Laureus social media pages on Monday.

Fraser-Pryce, who had a stellar 2022, was seen as the front-runner to claim her maiden Laureus award, following outstanding performances which include claiming a record fifth World Championship 100m title, as well as being crowned Diamond League champion.

Those titles also come against the backdrop of her breaking the 10.70s barrier seven times last year, more than any other female.

Fraser-Pryce’s win ensures the prestigious award stays in Jamaican hands as she takes the award from compatriot, Elaine Thompson-Herah, who claimed the 2021 honor.

Other nominees included 400m hurdles champion, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Swimmer Katie Ledecky, Alpine Skier Mikaela Shiffrin, Polish Tennis player, Iga Swiatek and Spanish soccer player Alexia Putellas.

Messi, who is walking away with his second Laureus Sportsman of the Year award, was also a top candidate among the nominees following his World Cup triumph in Qatar.

The award is the second major sporting trophy for the Paris Saint Germaine (PSG) star following the tournament, as he was named the FIFA Best Player of The Year in February.

Messi, who was also named World Cup MVP, is also the front-runner to claim the 2023 Ballon d’Or award for a record-extending eighth time.

The Argentine bested a strong field of nominees including clubmate, Kylian Mbappe, Pole vault record holder & World Champion Mundo Duplantis, along with NBA stars Steph Curry and LeBron James.

The list also had tennis star, Rafael Nadal and Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen.
