The climax of the 2026 World Cup continues to be partially overshadowed by controversy following reports that FIFA has launched an investigation into the post-match bust-up between Argentina and Spain players.

Following the final whistle at MetLife on Sunday, which confirmed Spain as the new World Champions, footage shows at least two Argentine players seemingly initiating conflict with the Spanish, leading to a mini-melee amid the celebrations.

Football’s governing body has now stepped in, placing attention on the case to establish the details leading to the incident and potential disciplinary action where necessary, SkySports reports.

The news comes hours following widespread backlash over footage of some Argentine players getting into a physical confrontation with the opposition as they ran onto the field to celebrate following the end of play.

Leandro Paredes was shown a red card following the full-time whistle after placing his hand around Spain defender Eric Garcia’s throat before kicking him to the floor. The Argentina midfielder then got into a heated confrontation with Spanish winger Gavi, appearing to have a swipe at his head before shoving the Barcelona star to the ground, before being restrained.

Nahuel Molina and Nicolas Otamendi were also involved in the shuffle, with reports stating that Molina appeared to have swung at the Spain captain Rodri, hitting him in the midriff as he ran to celebrate with teammates, as per The Mirror.

Spain added a second to their crest after adding the World Cup to their European Championship title for the second time. Sunday’s feat also made them the first nation in history to hold both men’s and women’s World Cups simultaneously.
