The passing of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of the Toroo Kingdom in Uganda and King Haakon VIII of Norway has signalled that the world’s youngest reigning monarch and oldest have both died in the same period, making one of the most unusual coincidences in world politics and dynastic structures in recent history.

According to reports, King Rukidi IV, dubbed the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has died at 34, the country’s Prime Minister shared in a statement on Friday.

Rukidi IV was elevated to crown king of Tooro in western Uganda at just three years old in 1995, following the death of his father, subsequently the world’s youngest ruler.

While the specific cause of death was not shared by the Toroo kingdom, a Ugandan government minister told local media that he had been critically ill and was seeking treatment in the U.S., BBC reports.

His reported death ironically coincides with the passing of Norway’s head of state, King Haakon VIII, at 89 years old, following a reign of 35 years, the Royal House of Norway announced on its website on Friday.

It’s understood that he died following a brief hospital stay for haemolytic anaemia, a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be replaced.

“It is with deep grief that we announce that His Majesty King Harald has passed away,” Norway’s Royal Court said in a statement. “King Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet on Friday, 28 August, at 6:35 AM.”
