“We got it Wrong”. This was the overarching response from US retail giant Target, which has been in damage control following severe backlash after advertising an offensive kids’ Halloween costume bearing a stark resemblance to the supremely racist “Jim Crow” character.
“Jim Crow,” was a fictional, racist character created in 1828, played by white actor Thomas Dartmouth Rice, who wore blackface, danced and sang mockingly as a portrayal of black people during a period of segregation and severe racism in the country.
The costume- an overall paired with a small hat and gloves, featuring a black child, immediately drew widespread criticism for its stark Crow, forcing an immediate recall and apology from the company.
“We pulled an offensive Halloween costume that should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer for sale.
The statement said, adding: “As a company, we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. We know this is especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners.”
It continued: “Removing the costume is an important first step, and the company is looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change to ensure this won’t happen again.”

There have since been several renewed calls to boycott the stores in response to the incident.
have apologised for selling an offensive kids’ costume with a black child that had a stark resemblance to the Jim Crow character.
