It was another historic day for Jamaica in Paris as discus thrower Roje Stona set a new Olympic record of 70.00m to claim Jamaica’s first Gold medal in the event.
Stone, delivered the massive toss in his fourth attempt shortly after Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna had set the winning target and previous record at 69.97 meters in the second round.
Alekna, who entered Paris with a season-best of 74.35 meters was unable to match Stona’s composure, failing to improve past his 69.9m effort settling for the silver medal.
Stona’s gold was confirmed as Australia’s Matthew Denny’s best effort remained at 69.31m in the second round which was good enough for Bronze.
The result comes a day after Rajindra Campbel delivered Jamaica’s first medal in the Shot Put for Bronze.
