Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson has indicated that a meeting will be held with his commanders across the island to discuss security measures for the upcoming school year.

These measures as underscored by Commissioner Anderson will be used to protect students, especially those who have to attend classes in troubled communities.

He further noted that the circumstances surrounding the start of the school year following the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic were rather unusual.

One such instance was the steady increase of violence shown among students over the last five months. This includes the brutal stabbing William Knibb high school student and footballer in March. The student was brutally stabbed to death by another student over an alleged guard ring; along with a Papine High student and an Excelsior high school student who were both killed within a few hours.

A week later a student from the Petersfield High School in Westmoreland, was injured following a knife wielding brawl on the school’s compound.

Since then, the Education Minister Fayval Williams urged administrators to be more vigilant especially during lunch breaks and the dismissal of schools. Minister Williams has also recently charged to religious fraternity to aid in the drive to stamp out anti-social behavior in schools.

In the interim, Commissioner Anderson has indicated that special attention will be given to the security interests of students in urban areas.
