Good News: Gang violence down in Haiti

“Bwa Kale” which is a movement where citizens hunt down and sometimes kill suspected gang members are being hailed for the decrease of gang violence in Haiti.

Violence by armed gangs has declined significantly and according to human rights organisation the vigilante group, Bwa Kale are linked to at least 160 killings in April.

It started after residents in Port-au-Prince lynched and set fire to more than a dozen suspected gang members on April 24.
 
The activities of Bwa Kale have reportedly been successful as it has resulted in no kidnappings for the period of April 24 to May 24.

During that period, 43 gang-linked slayings occurred.

Prior to the intervention of the group, a total of 146 gang murders were recorded between April 1 and April 23.

The vigilante group is mainly made up of young people, including some children.
