Sleek News can confirm that the Andrew Holness-led government is set to announce additional steps to advance the nation’s transition to a digital society.

While speaking at the official commissioning service for three community Wi-Fi access points in St. Andrew West Central at the Andrews Mews Recreational Park on Thursday (May 11), the Prime Minister said in the coming weeks and days, he will be making certain announcements regarding the acceleration of Jamaica’s intention to become a fully digital society.

He noted that the country is well on the way to making the transition, pointing to the establishment of the National Identification System (NIS).

He said his government have put in place the digital currency and “we have given directions to our Ministries to digitalise their operations;” most Ministries he said, are now moving from paper-based systems to digital systems.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the military is transitioning very similar to the Jamaica Constabulary Force and that the society is moving very rapidly to become digital.

He noted that the banking sector is seeing the changes, as well as they are transitioning very rapidly to digital.

Meanwhile for those who are hesitant in embracing the technology, Prime Minister Holness said, “we are here to support you… digital is the way, and so every Jamaican must become digital in their thinking, and that means you must have access to the Internet.”

The Prime Minister added that the government has started a programme to have broadband access all around the country
