- Digital operator puts customers, employees in focus with anniversary gifts
For those who were around in 2001, Digicel’s celebration of 23 years of service to Jamaica on Friday, April 19, 2024, will bring back great memories of their first mobile phone, telephone call or text. Having broken the telecoms monopoly by flipping the switch to deliver the country’s first GSM network in 2001, in addition to introducing SIM cards and later e-SIM, Digicel has revolutionised the way we communicate.
“As a Jamaican-born company, we are immensely grateful to our customers and staff for their unwavering support and dedication over the past 23 years. Thank you, Jamaica!” cheered Stephen Murad, CEO of Digicel Jamaica. He reflected, “Through the years, we’ve remained loyal to our customers and their purpose, while staying true to our promise of delivering the best network experience to everyone, everywhere.”
From access to apps, Digicel’s evolutionary journey has taken customers on a technological odyssey spanning classic push-button phones, the Blackberry® years, to the latest smartphones, tablets, smart watches, and other internet-enabled devices that power the everyday lives of almost every Jamaican. Today, Digicel boasts an award-winning super fast LTE mobile data network with over 99% population coverage, in addition to the country’s only true fibre-to-the-home TV and internet service, Digicel+, and the most sophisticated business communication network, powered by Digicel Business. To date, Digicel has made close to US$2 billion (J$31billion) in network investments in Jamaica.
At 23, Digicel is dubbing this year’s anniversary its “Jordan Year” – an enticing reference to the number 23 made famous by basketball legend, Michael Jordan. In the spirit of the celebration, Digicel is jumping through hoops to ensure that its customers feel loved and appreciated. Prepaid mobile customers will receive themed anniversary gifts of 23 free local minutes or 2.3 gigabytes of data when they unwrap their present in the MyDigicel app.
Customers visiting a Digicel store could walk out with up to $1,000 in free credit on anniversary day just for showing their pre-2010 Digicel memorabilia. In addition, 23 Postpaid customers will receive a free month of service. Over on Digicel’s social media pages, fans and followers could win cool gifts and prizes all day long, as the company stages live giveaways at its Tropical Plaza store in Kingston.
“April 19 is a day of thanks, and we’re marking our 23rd anniversary with the gift of voice and data, as a symbol of freedom for everyone to express themselves on the network that the overwhelming majority of Jamaicans still prefer, day in, day out,” Murad beamed.
Digicel employees will also partake in the celebration, engaging in fun-filled activities across at the company’s head office and regional locations.
With roots that run deep in Jamaica, Digicel, through its philanthropic arm, Digicel Foundation, has invested over US$46 million (J$7.1 billion) to positively impact over 800,000 lives in the areas of Special Needs, education, community entrepreneurship, and environmental protection for 20 years.
The “Jordan Year” anniversary activities underscore Digicel’s commitment to nurturing strong relationships with its customers and fostering a positive work environment for its employees.
