Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, have announced that they are separating after 18 years of marriage.

An Instagram post published on both Justin’s and Sophie’s accounts — in English and French, respectively — explained they have decided to “separate”.

It reads, “We would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate.”

Sophie and Justin first met as children in Montreal and crossed paths again at a charity event in 2003, according to Vogue.

They married in 2005 and have three children together: Xavier 15, Ella-Grace 14, and Hadrien 9.
