A Black woman has reportedly been charged for hurling the “n-word” in a tweet to another Black woman during a heated exchange.
According to reports, the incident occurred during a discussion around a football match on the platform on 27 August 2023, where the woman identified as 21-year-old Jamila Abdi, used the racial slur to reference black footballer Alexander Isak, of Premier League club Newcastle United.
“I’m so p* off let me get my hands on that f n***a,” Ms Abdi wrote, The Independent Reports.
It’s reported that Abdi was called in for questioning by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in December 2023, before being subsequently charged under the Communications Act of 2003 in July 2024.
Metropolitan Police alleged that the content “conveyed a message which was indecent or grossly offensive for the purpose of causing distress or anxiety to the recipient or to any other person to whom (…) intended (…)”.
A Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson said: “Hate crime has a profound impact on victims and communities, as per The Independent.
“Being from an ethnic minority background does not provide a defence to racially abusing someone.”
“Our commitment to tackling these abhorrent crimes through fair and impartial prosecution is unwavering.”
Abdi is reportedly set for an August 8 court appearance.
