Bayern Munich extended their record hold on the German Bundesliga title by the thinnest of margins following a dramatic final day which saw Borussia Dortmund falter at the finish line on Saturday.

In what was one of the closest title races in recent years, Bayern, who were two points behind leaders Dortmund, needed to win their game against Koln and for Dortmund to drop points in the fixture against Mainz.

The Bavarians whose title hopes were dependent on other results, capitalized on what was in their control as they battled to a dramatic 2-1 win over Mainz.

Kingsley Coman signaled Bayern’s intentions early with an eight-minute opener which seemed good enough for the win until Dejan Ljubicic’s 81st-minute leveler seemingly derailed their celebrations.

However, with the title on the line, Bayern delivered a champion’s response to grab the win through a Jamal Musiala strike in the 89th minute which proved to be the deciding say on the direction of the title following the final whistle.

Dortmund who needed victory to clinch their first title in 11 years, was shockingly held to a 2-2 draw with Mainz as the title slipped through their grasp for another season

That encounter was equally as dramatic as Dortmund were forced to fight their way back from a 2-goal deficit after Andreas Hanche-Olsen and Karim Onisiwo stunned the host with the strikes in the 15th and 24th minutes

Dortmund had to wait until the 69th minute to rebound courtesy of a Raphaël Guerreiro effort.

That goal swung the moment in their favor and eventually produced a match-saving strike by Niklas Süle in the 96th minute.

The effort was good enough to rescue the game, but not the title, as both Bayern and Dortmund ended the season on 71 points, with Bayern declared champions with a superior goal difference.
