R&B superstar Chris Brown avoided immediate jail time following a suspended sentence verdict in connection with his London nightclub attack, a Southwark Crown Court judge ruled on Monday.

Brown was given an eight-month custodial sentence, suspended for 12 months. Co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu gets four months, also suspended for 12 months. Both were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs each. Meaning he walks free unless he breaches the court’s conditions during the period.

The singer had pleaded guilty to the charge of striking another man, Abraham Diaw, with a bottle during a reported confrontation at the popular Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, during a 2023 visit to the UK.

During sentencing, His Honour Judge Baumgartner, described Brown’s use of a bottle in the altercation with a man at the London nightclub was “plainly dangerous”.

Brown’s lawyer also expressed the singer’s profound remorse to the victim and the persons present at the private members’ club, after prosecutors presented to the court that the incident “undoubtedly would have caused distress” to those at the club, as per the Daily Star.

She said: “This is an ugly and unattractive incident. It is, however, an incident which was very short-lived, lasting something more than 17 seconds but no more than 20. It is something which undoubtedly would have caused distress to those who are present and for which Mr Brown … offers a profound apology to all those present.”

The verdict concluded a near three-year legal debacle for the “new flame” hitmaker, who had to cancel at least three dates of his current joint R&B tour with Usher ahead of his sentencing.
