A fight broke out between Ukrainian and Russian delegates at an international conference in Turkey on Thursday.

A video of the incident that has been circulating online shows Oleksandr Marikovski, a Ukrainian MP, holding up his country’s flag in the hotel corridor where the summit was taking place in Ankara, Turkey’s capital.

The scuffle was, however, sparked when Russian delegation secretary Valery Stavitsky snatched a flag from a Ukrainian MP, who unfurled the banner behind Russian delegate, Olga Timofeeva as she was being interviewed, BBC reports.

Marikovski then chased after Stavitsky to recover the Ukrainian flag, but not before the pair tussled in that attempt, before being separated.

The delegates were in Turkey for the Summit of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC).

The summit brings together representatives of 13 member states around the Black Sea and aims to promote business cooperation and regional integration.

The scuffle comes after mounting tension inside the chamber where flags were also raised in apparent protest which had halted the proceedings.

The incident also comes as the Russia-Ukraine war enters a new phase, with Russia blaming Ukraine for a recent drone attack on the Kremlin.

According to reports, Russia called the attack an unsuccessful assassination attempt against President Vladimir Putin and promised retaliation for what it termed a “terrorist” act.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denied any involvement in the incident.

“We don’t attack Putin or Moscow. We fight on our territory. We’re defending our villages and cities,” said Zelenskyy at a news conference.
