It was sheer pandemonium and panic at the Cancun international Airport, Mexico, on Tuesday as travelers scattered for safety after mistaking loud sounds of signs being knocked over for gunfire.
The incident, which was captured on several phone videos, shows the terrified travelers dashing for the exists and taking cover at the nearest columns or beneath airport fixtures from suspected terror.
The Mexican National Guard was called in to respond to the incident, after which a thorough sweep was conducted and it was determined that no sign of gunplay was involved at the Cancun port of entry.
Officials later confirmed that the sounds were not gunfire, but were in fact, because of three large signs being accidentally knocked over by departing traveler, which mimicked the sounds of explosions, and subsequently startled everyone.
Mexico’s Chief of Police Lucio Hernandez Gutierre used twitter to dispel reports of attacks at the airport.
“We are working to find the cause of the multiple versions surrounding Cancun’s airport, not finding any signs of detonations or explosions,”
The incident comes after various reported drug-related shootings in the Cancun area in recent months, besides the 19 people were casualties by mass shooting in the state of Michoacan on Sunday night.
Incidents which may have played a part in the heightened anxiety among persons in the area.
Normal operations are reportedly back at the airport.
