President of the Air Traffic Controllers Association Kurt Solomon has confirmed that work will resume at the island’s airports after the country’s airspace was closed for hours today, grounding several flights and leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

This resolution comes after their concerns regarding faulty radar equipment at the nation’s airports were addressed by the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority.

It’s also understood that the measures agreed to are short term, with more long-term solutions to follow.

“The measures are in place, the Controllers have been apprised of those measures, it’s very technical it’s not off, Information has to be transmitted to the surrounding airspaces etc. so all of this go in place to allow for a seamless transition in resuming where operations are concerned ”  Solomon explained.

Earlier today, Air Traffic controllers at both the Norman Manley Airport in Kingston and Sangster International Airport in Montegobay, St James have indicated that services will be suspended .

This drastic measure comes after Air Traffic Controllers have been at odds with the Ministry of Finance for the last three months about an apparent fallout in salary negotiations.

However, Information Minister, Robert Morgan, has estimated the losses to the economy at more than $7-billion.
