The West Indies preserved their chance of a semifinal spot in the T20 Cricket World Cup following a crushing nine-wicket victory over the USA in their ‘Super 8’ match at Kensington Oval, Barbados, on Friday.
The Windies, who needed a win to remain competitive for a shot at the final four following their loss to England, set the parameters early after restricting the USA to 128 all out inside 20 overs after opting to field first.
Andre Russell(3-31) and Roston Chase (3-19) led a disciplined bowling attack for the Windies, with Alzarri Joseph supporting with 2-31 and Gudakesh Motie chipping in with a wicket to keep the Americans below 130.
With a set victory target of 129 runs, the Windies wrapped up their reply in 11 overs following a stunning half-century from opener Shai Hope.
Hope blasted 82 runs from 39 balls, including eight 4s and four 6s in an exciting innings to lead a dominant Windies display.
Despite Johnson Charles’ dismissal for 15 runs, Nicholas Pooran’s 27 runs help see the Caribbean team across the line with 130-1 with nine overs to spare.
Victory for the Windies in their final match against South Africa on Sunday will see the former champs advance to the semis.
