World Cup champions France saw their 100% start to the 2022 World Cup snapped on Wednesday after they were upset 1-0 by Tunisia in their final Group D game in Qatar.
France, who won their opening two games in convincing fashion, were not only denied a perfect record in the group stage but were also kept off the scoresheet for the first time in the tournament by Tunisia.
The all-important goal came in minute 58 courtesy of a strike from the Tunisian Captain Wahbi Khazri, which was their first goal of this tournament.
France who rested a number of their regular starters in the first half including captain and goalie Hugo Lloris, showed more of a threatening imposition in attack once some of their usual starters were injected into the game, which pulled the Tunisia keeper into a handful of saves.
They were however unable to pull a goal back before the final whistle which saw them suffer their first defeat in the Cup.
This result however was inconsequential to the overall standings, as the already-qualified France with six points advanced as the group winner goal difference over Australia who also ended on six following a 2-0 win over Denmark to drop them from the tournament.
Both France and Australia advance to the Round of 16 as the top two teams from the group
