Triple jump sensation Jaydon Hibbert nominated for World Athletics Rising Star Award

World U-20 Triple jump champion Jaydon Hibbert has been named among the top five nominees for the World Athletics Male Rising Star of the Year Award.

Hibbert who has been a standout in the jumps throughout his junior career closed a dominant 2022 as the number 1 junior jumper on the planet.

The 17-year-old not only dominated the region but also on a global scale.

 After clinching gold at the 2022 ISSA Boys and Girls Championships for Kingston College (KC) in both the long and triple jumps; including a championship record, a personal best, and a then world Junior lead of 16.66m in the Tripple, he returned a week later for double gold at the 49th Carifta games in April.

Those performances of course were a foreshadowing of what was to come, as he continued he verified his world-class ability on by rewriting the record books.

Hibbert leaped to a staggering 17.27 meters to not only shatter the championship record…but also set a new National U-18 mark on his way to gold at the Cali, Columbia-hosted championships.

That distance putting No. 2 on the all-time world list, trailing a 57-1.5 (17.41) U18 world best by Fortun from 2018.

Fellow nominees include;

– World U20 pole vault champion Anthony Ammirati of France,

-World U20 200m record Erriyon Knighton of the USA

– World U20 100m champion and record holder Letsile Tebogo from Botswana.

– World Championships 800m fourth place Emmanuel Wanyonyi, of Kenya

This is the second nomination for Jamaica in the rising star category after 100m hurdles U-20 Champion Kerrica Hill’s nomination in the female section.

“The nominations reflect the many standout performances that the sport has witnessed this year, at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 and other events around the world” World Athletics said in a statement on their website.
