Iconic Reggae group Toots & The Mayals continue to enjoy an audience among current music fans as their 1968 release “54-46” (Was My Number) earned gold certification in the United Kingdom (UK) for sales of 400,000 units.

The track’s certification was verified as a gold-selling record by the British Phonographic Institute (BPI) on Friday.

54-46‘s update comes four years after achieving Brit-certified silver status for the sales equivalent of 200,000 units in the UK in 2019.

The track which formed part of their 1968 ‘Sweat and Dandy’ album, has also been sampled over the years by several major names such as Edm, Pop collective Major LazorMy Number, and Dancehall Legend Yellow Man for his track “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt.”

The single was also a base sample for the track “OH Yeah” by rapper Foxy Brown and Dancehall icon Spragga Benz.

The Reggae hit was inspired by the real life experience of lead singer Toots Hibbert’s time in prison. He was arrested for possession of marijuana however it was later revealed that he was set up by a promoter.
