Dancehall superstar Shaggy says his signature voice came from mocking his drill instructors during his time in the US Marines.

“Mr Boombastic” talked about the fun fact that led to the development of his signature vocal style during one of his recent interviews at Sirius XM, which was posted to his social media on Friday.

The Grammy-winner joined the Marines a few years after his move to the US at the age of 18 to live with his mother in Brooklyn, where he was on active duty from 1988-1992.

That sound proved to be a breakthrough for the diamond-selling artiste who scored his first number one with “Oh Carolina” using this unique tonal cadence that has since become a globally recognized style.
