The Reggae Girlz continued their historic run at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Saturday, as they defeated Panama 1-0 to secure their first-ever tournament win.

Allyson Swaby netted the all-important goal in minute 56, as the Jamaicans were rewarded for their persistent pressure in the game.

Swaby, who dawned the captain’s armband in the absence of regular skipper Khadija Shaw, rose highest to head a looping corner from Trudy Carter into the net for Jamaica’s first goal-of-the-tournament.

Despite several goal-scoring chances throughout the remainder of the half, that goal would stand as the final say in the match as the Caribbean team held on for the historic achievement.
The win sees Jamaica with one foot in the knockout round as they reclaim second in Group F with four points from two games.

They will be seeking to secure a spot in the next round when they tackle third-place Brazil in their final group game next Wednesday.

Jamaica needs only a point to confirm their slot after the Brazilians were beaten by leaders France to remain on three points.

With Shaw set to return after serving a one-match suspension, the Girlz will no doubt be confident of bagging maximum points in that game, which could see them top the group.
