Red cards overshadow USA’s 3-0 victory over CONCACAF rivals Mexico which saw four players sent off during in an intense Nations League semi-final in Las Vegas on Thursday.
Captain Christian Pulisic scored twice with rising star Riccardo Pepi adding a third for the US in the highly charged match.
The fixture was always destined to be an intense game given their history both on and off the field, and things were expected to get heated as players from both teams were sent off during an intense semifinal.
Before that melee, however, the excitement started with opening goals by Pulisic.
His first came in the 39th minute after being the first to a loose ball in the area before slotting past the Mexico keeper to make it 1-0.
The Chelsea man doubled his tally in the 46th minute after tapping in a searching cross by Tim Weah to make it 2-0 to begin the second half.
The game, however, began its descent into chaos in the final 20 minutes following Montes’ 69th-minute red card for kicking USA’s Folarin Balogun.
The hosts were also down to 10 men after McKennie was sent off two minutes later for being part of the scuffle on review.
Pepe added a USA’s third in the 78th minute before the celebrations were again overshadowed by conflict with two more dismissals.
Mexico’s Artega and USA’s Dest were sent to the showers early following another fracas on the field.
The game was later blown off prematurely with half of the extra time remaining following reported homophobic chants by members of the crowd.
The result brought another bitter end to the contest between the neighbors.
The US is now set to play Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League final on Monday after they beat Panama 2-0 in their semi.
