Earlier today the Buckingham Palace formally announced the passing of Queen Elizabeth II’s husband, Prince Philip. The full statement reads
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
The news has undoubtably wounded many around the world as the bereaved took to social media to offer their condolences. One such media post came from Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon who tweeted
“I send my personal and deepest condolences – and those of scotgov and the people of Scotland – to Her Majesty the Queen and her family.”
Prince Philip was aged 99. According to the palace, he “passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.” It never lamented much on the event beyond that.
