The stage is being set for a potential presidential re-match between former US President Donald Trump and incumbent Joe Biden after the latter officially declared his intention to seek re-election in 2024.

There was much talk about President Biden, seeking a second term in office, and it was made official when he launched his campaign in a video on Tuesday.

In the three-minute video, he said it was a pivotal moment with “freedoms and rights under threat.”

“This is not a time to be complacent,” he said. “That’s why I’m running”.

Biden’s 2020 running mate Vice-President Kamala Harris, who is also featured in the video, will also be his partner for his latest campaign.

Biden and Trump squared off in one of the more contentious elections in the country’s history, which among things, was riddled with speculations of vote tampering. A sore point that reportedly played a part in the siege on Capitol Hill by Pro-Trump protestors on January 1, 2021.

Rioters stormed the nation’s capital in an attempt to prevent lawmakers from ratifying Biden’s election win as Trump refused to accept the loss and was later impeached after being charged with “incitement of insurrection.”

Biden defeated Trump in 2020 on the promise to “restore the soul of the United States”.

“When I ran for president four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America – and we still are,” President Biden said in the announcement video.

Last year, former President Trump formally announced his bid to seek re-election in front of supporters at Mar-a-Lago, his waterfront estate in Florida.

Both have traded barbs over the years, with the latest coming on Tuesday, as Trump criticized Biden’s tenure in office.

“You could take the five worst presidents in American history, and put them together, and they would not have done the damage Joe Biden has done,” he said in a statement uploaded to his YouTube channel.
