Sports giant Nike has reportedly ended its partnership with NBA superstar Kyrie Irving a month after the player shared a controversial film on his social media which is said to include Anti-Semitic material.
According to reports, Nike founder Phil Knight said talking to the press regarding the decision said, “Kyrie stepped over the line. It’s kind of that simple.”
Knight added: “He made some statements that we just can’t abide by, and that’s why we ended the relationship. I was fine with that.”
The Sportswear giant initially suspended Irving’s contract last month which also coincided with an eight-game suspension from the current Franchise the Brooklyn Nets regarding the since-deleted post.
The seven-time NBA all-star met with NBA commissioner Adam Silver and Jewish community leaders, while he and the Nets pledged to donate $1m to combat “hate and intolerance “BBC reports.
This is, in addition, to publicly denouncing some of the content of the film and apologizing for the disruption caused as part of remedial action for his return to the courts.
This apparently was not enough for the brand which has now opted to part ways fully with the player.
Following news of the separation, Irving posted a few cryptic messages about being free seemingly aimed at the recent split with Nike.
He also among his tweets was a post suggesting he may be considering selling his own shoe brand independently.
Irving had partnered with Nike for eight years and, according to Forbes, had an $11m deal per year with the brand as of 2019.
