‘NIDS for Jamaica 60’ was the sentiment by Prime Minister Andrew Holness following his tour of the National Identification System (NIDS) Enrollment Centre on Tuesday.

Mr Holness stated it’s the aim that Jamaicans access to the system coincides with the country’s 60th anniversary of independence later this year.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness during his tour of the NIDS Enrolment Centre on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.

“In our 60th year of independence, I believe it is imperative that we fully institutionalise our National Identification System,” Mr Holness wrote in a post to his Instagram page.

The Prime Minister, while on his tour of the facility, reinforced the necessity for such a system and the benefits for citizens.

He added that the institutionalisation of the NIDS will bring the country in line with standards and allow for better maneuvering on the digital space.

“Every Jamaican should be guaranteed an identity; this is especially important because the emerging world requires us to articulate and maneuver in a digital space,” he wrote.

Mr Holness, while stressing the push for the independence rollout, also subtly expressed encouragement for Jamaicans to buy into the programme.

“The National Identification System will be fully operational in our 60th year. I hope that we will have a significant number of Jamaicans identified adequately through the National Identification System by the end of the year,” he concluded.
