The issuance of identification cards under the National Identification System (NIDS), will begin through a pilot program that will be undertaken in the corporate area.
This was disclosed during Tuesday’s sitting of the Standing Finance Committee of the House of Representatives.
Minister without portfolio in the office of the Prime Minister, Floyd green said the exercise is expected to kick off early in the second half of the year.
Mr. Green also shared that enrollment sites will also be established at post offices in collaboration with the post and telecommunications department in an effort to maximize existing resources.
“Once the pilot phase is completed then we will roll out islandwide and we expect this to happen towards the end going early into next year,” Green noted.
Green also noted that the Office of the Prime Minister under which NIDS falls will also be partnering with the Registrar Generals Department ( RGD) as well as the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) to assist with the full rollout of I.D. cards across the island.
The National Identification System will provide a comprehensive and secure structure that will enable the collection and storage of identity information.
This secure voluntary tool can also verify an individual’s identity, facilitate the electronic signing of documents and securely access a range of government services online.
