Dancehall’s Influence on Nicki Minaj’s music was again on show after the rap juggernaut sampled Beenie Man’s 1995 hit “Memories” for her latest album, “Pink Friday 2”.
The sample was applied to the 22nd and final track of her project aptly titled “Just The Memories,” which sees Minaj interpolate the lyrics of the Beenie Man classic for the song’s chorus.
“Memories don’t leave like people do
They’ll always ‘member you They do
They do, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Memories don’t leave like people do
They’ll always ‘member you
There’s never been another you
You“
“Just the Memories,” like the Dancehall original, is a compelling, introspective effort by the rapper, which stirs motivational ‘feels’ through her vivid storytelling about her humble beginnings and her turbulent journey, fueled by her sticktoitiveness and focus as she grew to become one of the greatest MC’s of her generation.
The track is filled with sharp-witted lyricism cradled with an almost effortless melodic flow as an exclamation to her regal command of rap delivery, almost as a reminder of Minaj’s lyrical aptitude and creative acumen marking, a fitting close to her fifth studio album.
Minaj, who has long expressed her affinity for Beenie Man‘s music and performance cadence, made no reservations about her appreciation for the Grammy winner during her acceptance speech at last year’s Video Music Awards (VMAs).
The sample marks the second time the dancehall icon has been involved in a Nicki Minaj album, having previously featured on her 2012 Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded release on a track titled “Gunshot.“
