Newcastle United made a massive statement in their charge to trophies this season after eliminating Manchester City from the EFL Cup following a 1-0 victory in their third-round fixture at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

Inspirational striker Alexander Isak was again the talisman for Newcastle after scoring the all-important goal in minute 53.

Isak, who made an unmarked run inside the box, was on hand to tap a teasing pass across the face of goal, from teammate Joelinton as the “Magpies” made the most of a rare lapse in the City defence going up the hour mark.

That lapse proved to be fatal to the English Champions as last season’s Cup finalist Newcastle, held on for a narrow victory to preserve their quest for a return to the championship round.

The result also sees Newcastle avenge their 1-0 loss to the “Cityzenz” in their opening encounter this season back in August.

The loss is also the first for Pep Guardiola’s team this season, including their six straight wins in the Premiership and opening win in the Champions League.

Newcastle now advances to the round of 16 along with fellow premier league teams Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham FC, who also scored wins in their third-round games on the day.
