A newborn baby boy was found abandoned in the waste bin of a plane’s toilet by airport staff in Mauritius.

A 20-year-old woman from Madagascar, suspected of giving birth on the flight, has since been arrested.

The newborn was found by airport officers who were conducting a routine customs check of the Air Mauritius plane shortly after it landed in Port Louis. The baby boy was rushed to a public hospital for treatment.

The suspected mother initially denied that the baby was hers, however, after a medical examination was conducted, it confirmed that she had just given birth.

The mother, who is Malagasy, was travelling to Mauritius on a work visa. She is under police surveillance and will be investigated after being discharged from the hospital.

Reports are that the woman and baby boy are doing well.
