The farewell journey for Tennis icon Serena Williams continues for another day after she dismissed Danka Kovinic in a convincing straight victory to advance to the second round of the US Open on Monday.
Given the magnitude of the occasion surrounding her presence, Williams provided a grand show to the live crowd and viewers alike.
The 23-time grand slam champion turned back the clock as she played one of her best brands of tennis in months to entertain the US open crowd as she claimed a dominant 6-3,6-3 victory over her Montenegrin opposition.
Willed on by the Flushing Meadows crowd, Williams looked sharp in almost every department, showing agility and wit to outplay the number 46th ranked Kovinic.
The American great who has looked far below her best since her comeback from injury has shown glimpses of top-eight level performances, as she played with confidence in each game and maintained that momentum throughout the match.
“It’s extremely difficult still because I absolutely love being out there. The more tournaments I play, I feel like the more I can belong out there. That’s a tough feeling to have, and to leave knowing the more you do it, the more you can shine “,Williams said about occasions such as these affect her.
“But it’s time for me, you know, to evolve to the next thing. I think it’s important because there’s so many other things that I want to do ” the tennis megastar added to reiterate her decision to step away from the sport.
Serena will next be in action tomorrow alongside sister Venus as the two pair up of the Czech pair of Lucie Hradecká and Linda Nosková in the Doubles Category.
