The British-based Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards have dropped the ‘Best Reggae Act’ category and has replaced it with ‘Best Caribbean Music Act’ for the awards’ 25th anniversary in 2022.
The nominees named in the revised category are; Koffee, Spice, Shenseea, Sean Paul, Popcaan, and Skillibeng.
Skilli however is, the only Jamaican nominated in the ‘Best International Act’ category which also includes the likes of Burna Boy, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Drake, Jack Harlow, Jazmine Sullivan, Kendrick Lamar, Summer Walker, and Tems.
The nominees and categories were released by the MOBO awards on Friday.
The presentation of the awards is set to be held on November 30 at the OVO arena in London.
The winner of the ‘Best Caribbean Music Act’ category will be determined by a MOBO Awards specialist committee.
Spice, Shenseea, Sean Paul and Koffee have all released albums this year that have been submitted for Reggae album Grammy consideration, while Popcaan’s ‘Great is He’ album is pending release this year.
Skillibeng on the other hand has been in high demand for features on international projects such as DJ Khaled’s God Did album, Wizkid’s- More love, Less Ego album which was released today (November 11) along with Busta Rhymes’ soon-to-be-released ‘The fuse is Lit’ EP.
The nomination is the “Crocodile Teeth” hitmaker’s fourth at the awards having previously been nominated in the ‘Best Reggae Act’ and ‘Best International Act’, categories in 2021.
Two-time winner Popcaan, has now doubled that figure after earning his eighth nomination while last year’s winner Shenseea who became the first female act to take the accolade enjoys back-to-back nods.
Reggae sensation Koffee and Queen of the Dancehall Spice have both bagged their third nomination while six-time winner “DuttyPaul” himself Sean Paul is up for his tenth nomination.
