Lebron James etched his name further into NBA folklore on Tuesday night after breaking Kareem Abdul-Jaabar’s scoring record to become the league’s greatest scorer of all time in the Lakers’ narrow 130-133 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
James, who entered the game needing just 36 points to claim the record-38,3887 points, dished an effort more than surplus to the required amount as he began his reign as the ‘G.O.A.T’ by adding two more points to end with 38points on the night.
An air of nerve-racking anticipation pulsed throughout the venue each time James took possession of the ball fans, teammates, and even the opposition anxiously chalked off the remaining points needed for the record after each basket.
That moment came at the end of the third quarter after Lebron drained a fade-away two-pointer to re-write the history books as the league’s new all-time great in points scored.

Hall of Famer Jabar was in attendance to witness his record officially being passed as he was among the throng of celebrities, fellow greats, and media personalities to congratulate James on officially being crowned king of the league.

The previous record stood for 49 years from 1984-2023, with James not only keeping the record in the lakers’ possession but also solidifying himself as a franchise legend.
He now relegates fellow greats Kobe Bryant (33,643) and Michael Jordan (32,292) to fourth and fifth on the list respectively.

Despite the loss, it could not overshadow the historic significance of the game as James checked off another milestone to strengthen his claim for MVP honors.
In January, James created history as the first and only player to score 40 points against all teams in the league following a masterclass against the city-rival LA Clippers.
James will have a chance to extend his record further on Thursday when the Lakers face the Milwaukee Bucks also at the Crypto.com Arena.
