Japan’s Ministry of Culture is reportedly considering the establishment of an Asian version of the Grammys to recognise the achievements of artistes in the Asian region.
According to reports, Tokura Shunichi, Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, shared the award show’s consideration during a recent interview with the Japanese publication Yomiuri Shimbun.
The proposed award ceremony is expected to take place in the city of Kyoto, where the Ministry of Culture will relocate in March next year, Nante Japan reports.
According to Kbizz.com, the Agency seeks to explore ways to promote Japanese culture to develop the music and film industries to be more export-centric.
Such a move would replicate the Latin Grammys as the only other Grammy Awards outside of the US that specifically focuses on music from the Latin market.
Korean pop or K-pop acts such as BTS and Black Pink currently dominate the Asian music market and have gradually become global sensations.
Tokura, who’s also a composer, pointed out that “Japan has a large domestic music market, so the domestic market is enough. Koreans have more initiative to expand overseas.” He added, “In order to spread JPop overseas, I want to hold a music award show in Kyoto that will attract attention from around the world.”
