Actor Jamie Foxx is attempting to clarify the misunderstanding around a since-deleted social media post that critics have labeled as antisemitic.

In an Instagram post on Saturday, Foxx shared an apology to those in the “Jewish Community” who were “offended” by his previous statement.

Foxx’s message was about a prior post, which read, “They killed this dude named Jesus… What do you think they’ll do to you???!.”

He ended the post with the hashtags #fakefriends and #fakelove.

While the cryptic post was intended as a metaphoric reference to a specific situation about betrayal, critics interpreted “they” as the general statement about Jewish people, and historically antisemitism linked to the belief that Jews are responsible for the death of Jesus Christ.

The controversy comes two weeks after his official return to social media, where he posted a video addressing concerns over his health and recovery after suffering an undisclosed “medical emergency” earlier this year.
