Billboard charting producer and record label head of “Tru Ambassador Entertainment Jahvel “Jahvy” Morrison shares insights on having a good manager.

How important is it to have a good manager?

“I don’t think it’s said enough, it’s one of the most important things ever [for] an artiste” Jahvy expressed,.. “it plays a significant role in the overall success of any artiste.”

He also underscored the importance of having a solid team structure in addition to management which he notes enhances the overall quality output in the artistry.

“I can’t emphasize how important it is to have a good manager but also a team,” he stressed, noting the collective effort facilitates space for the artiste to maximise their creativity.

What characteristics does a good manager need to have?

“A key sense of where you want to bring the artiste and clearly outlined objectives.” He also noted that some persons prefer to focus on handling bookings or paperwork for their respective businesses, while others play a more hands-on role in the development of the talent.

How do you identify talent?

“I think for me it might be easier because of my experience as a musician. I’ll know it when it is and when it’s not,” Jahvy, who has formal training and background in music and music theory, said.

You play a very active role in guiding the flourishing career of one dancehall’s burgeoning stars “450,” what motivates that level of investment?

“I think it’s just the solid understanding we have as business partners and as friends and just seeing him grow an artiste from the beginning is really what makes it so special.”

How did you meet 450?

“I was introduced to 450 when he had one song [out] and he had a lot of potential as a young artiste, and dancehall can be such a competitive [and cold] space, so my efforts are really about ensuring that people see how unique and valuable as an artiste,” he explained highlighting genuine commitment is another tenet of good management.

He noted that in addition to talent and good management, drive, professionalism, and humility are also an essential factor for the manager and artiste dynamic to work as he credits 450 for possessing all those attributes.

When quizzed about managing egos, he noted he’s yet to experience such an artiste adding that it’s a family vibe at Tru Ambassador so that kind of energy has never been an issue.

“I haven’t experienced that,.. me and my team have been family vibes from the jump..so couldn’t tell you. I know you have artistes who have egos. I have seen it, but I have never experienced it.” In addition, he said 450 has been one of the most down-to-earth people to be around so it has never been a challenge.

Future projects?

“It’s a hectic year for Tru Ambassador, including 450‘s first major performance in Kingston in May. We are looking into doing some projects, more music, more videos, more collabs. I know people are anticipating new music with Alkaline and all of that. So it’s a year you can expect anything.”
