Having crafted several hits with the likes of Aidonia, Govana, Ding Dong, Jada Kingdom, and Jahmiel among others, producer and engineer Emanuel “Emudio” Schirmer has crafted a respected name in the local entertainment space.
Sleek Jamaica had a chat to learn more about this talented musician.
Who is Emudio?
“I’m a Reggae and Dancehall producer originally from Germany but I live in Jamaica. I’ve been on the [music] scene for over ten years now.”
How did you get into music?
“I was involved in music from a young age. My mom is a piano teacher,” a reserved Emudio shared, adding, “The first instrument I actually [learned] to play was the Cello, then it was the drums.”
Why production and when did you make the transition?
“I’m more of an introverted person. So being an artiste wasn’t really something I was trying to get into” he shared jokingly. “Classical music I just figured wasn’t really my thing overall and, then I started to listen to a lot of hip hop, rap and pop music as well. Then I got interested in the production aspect.”
The Stuggart native shared that his early introduction to Reggae and Dancehall music was peaked by songs from Sean Paul in the early 2000s, who has a massive European fan base.
“I remember hearing Sean Paul on the radio regularly in Germany, and that was like mainstream radio, cuz Sean Paul is an international artiste, so, that was probably like my first introduction to Dancehall. I think, at the time, I didn’t know it was dancehall [music], I just liked Sean Paul’s music,” he added.
“That was probably around 2004,05,06” he continued adding, “and I remember as I like, I [got] more into Dancehall my favourite artistes at the time were like Sizzla, and [Vybz] Kartel.“
Emudio also describes his production style as a fuse of sounds, with the core foundation being dancehall.
Who have you worked with?
“In one way or the other, I worked with almost everybody, but I would say who I have worked with more closely would be Aidonia, Govana, Jada Kingdom, Jahmiel.”
Productions
“Genna Bounce Riddim” was the breakthrough project with Aidonia’s “Yeh Yeh“, Govana “Gyal Clown“, and Ding Dong’s “Genna Bounce.” Then, after that a bunch of series songs with Govana, such as “Shrimp Patty” and “Convo” [among others]. Also, “Buddum” by Jada Kingdom and “I Need You” by Jahmiel are songs that come to mind now.“
The creative producer also noted that his musical sojourn to Jamaica was a passion journey, having opted to drop out of college where he studied Economics and Philosophy in Germany then come to Jamaica in 2010 before officially emigrating in 2014.
He has earned success both as a producer and engineer working on several top projects over the years and is poised to continue delivering solid releases including with younger generations of music stars. Among the upcoming acts he is currently working with are burgeoning artistes, Nhance and J Calm.
