Former Reggae Boyz target, Ivan Toney has been slapped with an eight-month ban from football for breaking England’s Football Association betting rules.
According to reports, the Brentford striker was found to have breached 232 FA betting rules during a four-year span.
It’s understood that Toney has also been fined £50,000 and warned about his future conduct regarding the betting rules.
In a statement, the FA said: “His [Toney] sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a personal hearing.”
“The independent Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course, and the FA will wait to review them before commenting further.”
It’s understood breaches took place between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021, during which time Toney represented several clubs including Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United, and his current team Brentford.
His suspension is said to come into effect immediately, which means he will not be allowed to play again until January 17, 2024.
The 27-year-old can however return to training with Brentford four months before it ends on September 17, 2023.
Toney had a breakthrough season this year, scoring 20 goals in 33 Premier League appearances to help Brentford break into the top 10 on the table.
Toney had emerged as a top target among British-based players scouted for Jamaica’s national team during their World Cup qualifying campaign and 2021 Gold Cup tournament.
Brentford says they note the FA’s decision and are awaiting the publication of the written reasons before “considering our next steps”.
Toney earned his first England cap as a late substitute in their 2-0 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Ukraine in March after receiving his first call-up by Gareth Southgate last September.
