A 61-year-old woman from Palm Springs, Florida has been accused of stabbing her physically disabled husband 140 times and hitting him on the head with a meat cleaver following a multi-million dollar divorce settlement.

The accused, Joan Burke, was arrested on Sunday and charged with first-degree murder.

The Palm Springs Police Department said the body of Melvin Weller, 62 was found by the woman’s son Ricardo Anthony Green, 41, who reported it to the police.

Reports revealed that a bloody knife and a meat cleaver were found in the sink along with a bloody nightgown.

Burke, who was found lying on a bed, was later taken to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

According to court documents, Weller had filed for divorce from Burke in December of last year.

Attorney Nicole Hamil-Scott, who was handling the divorce proceedings for Weller, notes that one of the items for the possible dispute was high-value real estate that under the Florida law would have to be divided.

Scott also shared that a meeting was held to outline some of the terms with Burke’s lawyer one week before the murder took place.

“That could be one of the reasons, under Florida statute, whenever there are marital assets under the Florida law, those marital assets would need to be equitably divided between the parties without getting too much into attorney-client privilege is, the parties had substantial assets between themselves,” Hamil-Scott stated.

Additionally, the attorney shared that Burke’s pension from her job as a licensed nursing assistant would’ve been split in half as alimony for her husband.

As it stands, Burke has been held without bond.
