Seneca County Sheriff’s office has outlined that a Florida truck driver and an unidentified suspect were arrested after allegedly dousing a 1-year-old in a “flammable liquid” and attempting to light the child on fire at a gas station in Tyre, New York on Wednesday, May 4.

Jamie Avery Jr was charged with attempted aggravated murder, second-degree attempted murder, second-degree arson, second-degree attempted arson, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Reports indicate that on the morning of the incident, police deputies were called to a truck stop after receiving reports of multiple fires.

Upon arrival, Police Deputies discovered the 1-year-old in the company of Avery Jr. and the unknown assailant.

It was also alleged that the two suspects had poured a flammable liquid on the 1-year-old child and attempted to light the child on fire inside the building but were unsuccessful.

Investigators also noted that while conducting a search of the premises, a “suspicious device” was discovered in the men’s bathroom.

Following this, the building was evacuated, and several bomb squad units were called to the scene, but it was determined to be a “makeshift replica.”

Around that time, an injured 4-year-old was also discovered abandoned in the cabin of a tractor-trailer; Deputies used forced entry to remove the child from the cabin and immediately transported them by ground to a hospital.

As it now stands, both children are expected to make full recoveries and are currently in the custody of the Seneca County Division of Human Services.
