A shooting incident resulting in the death of two persons and three others wounded in Hawaii last weekend, is said to have stemmed from an argument at a cockfight.

The probable cause report, which detailed the incident, was made public following the initial court appearance by one of the suspects in the shooting, Jacob Borge, as per the Associated Press(AP)

Borge, 23, reportedly turned himself in to authorities along with a 16-year-old boy following the fatal incident in Hawaii.

It’s understood that Borge was charged with first- and second-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder, and firearms charges. Bail was also reportedly set at US $2 million.

According to police, petitions were filed against the juvenile to face the same charges.

State Public Defender James Tabe, whose office represented Borge at the initial hearing, noted that it would be premature to comment on the case at its current stage.

On April 15, Honolulu police were dispatched to a rural neighborhood in Waianae, following a report of shots fired after midnight at a cockfight, according to court documents.

Upon their arrival, attendees reportedly fled from the scene, it continued.

One of the men who was shot told police that three young males became embroiled in an argument that turned physical with six male affiliates of a “well-known organizer of chicken fights in the Waianae area,” court papers said.

It’s understood that while chicken fights/ cockfighting is illegal, it, however, remains a fairly ‘popular’ activity in the island state.

The other shooting victims told law enforcement that there were between 100-200 persons present at the time of the incident.

Cathy Rabellizsa-Manners, 59, died from a gunshot wound to the face, and Gary Rabellizsa, 34, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Honolulu AP.

While the subject of the argument remains unclear, Rabellizsa-Manners’ husband told police that Rabellizsa tried to break up the altercation and got into a fistfight with two males which resulted in shots being fired.

It’s understood that Borge negotiated with the Police to surrender himself for prosecution.

A preliminary hearing for Borge is reportedly scheduled for Monday.
