Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has attributed her desire to focus more on quality family time as the main factor behind her planned retirement following the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“My son needs me,” Fraser-Pryce stated as she shared her thoughts about her impending retirement during her feature for the February issue of Essence Magazine.

The global sprint icon shared that it was time to dedicate to her family, especially her son Zyon,6, and husband Jason Pryce, who she noted has sacrificed and shown immense support, which allowed her to fulfil her achievements.

“There’s not a day I’m getting up to go practice and I’m like, ‘I’m over this Fraser-Pryce said. My son needs me,” she added. “My husband and I have been together since before I won in 2008. He has sacrificed for me. We’re a partnership, a team. And it’s because of that support that I’m able to do the things that I have been doing for all these years. And I think I now owe it to them to do something else.”

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce celebrates her victory in the finals of Women’s 100m at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon.

The five-time women’s 100-meter World Champion declared her intention to hang up her spikes after the ‘Paris games’ during the lead-up to last year’s Championships in Budapest, where she copped Silver and Bronze medals in the 100m and 4x100m relay, respectively.
