European football champions England claimed the inaugural women’s Finalissma title after beating South American giant Brazil 4-2 penalty, following a dramatic stalemate in regulation time at the Wembley Stadium on Thursday.
The Finalissma is the championship game contested between the winners of the Copa América and UEFA European Championships.
Playing in front of a capacity crowd at Wembley Stadium, the European champions again delivered the goods at home.
The ‘lioness’ who carried over their dominance to the fixture was however forced to claim the trophy the hard way, after Andressa Alves’ extra time goal canceled out Ella Toone’s 23rd-minute opener and ensured that the game went to penalties.
The South American giants threatened to disrupt the English party with some late drama in the battle between the continental champions.
It would however be a case of delayed but not denied for the British, as they showed more composure from the spot 4-2 to claim the Inaugural Women’s Finalisama trophy, adding to their European triumph this season.
That triumph is a massive confidence boost ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which is set to be jointly hosted by New Zealand and Australia from July 20- Aug 20.
