Indian officials have outlined that 70-year-old Maya Murmu was trampled to death by an elephant from the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary on Thursday, June 9.

Indian police officials also outlined that the tusker then returned later to attack her body again when the funeral rites were in progress at a village in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Saturday.

Reports indicate that Murmu was fetching water from a tubewell in Raipal village on Thursday morning when she was attacked by an elephant that strayed into the village area from the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.

Following this, the victim was taken to hospital in a critical state where she died while undergoing treatment.

So far, over 100 Indians have been killed 100 each year by elephants.

As such, civilians are being urged to exercise caution when dealing with elephants as the results can be fatal.
