British Pop star Ed Sheeran has reportedly threatened to step away from the music industry if he’s found guilty of copyright infringement.
The Grammy-winning singer is currently embroiled in a lawsuit over his 2014 hit single ‘Thinking Out Loud,’ following allegations that the Billboard board chart topper violated the copyright of Marvin Gaye’s 1973 classic ‘Let’s Get It On.’
According to reports, the lawsuit against Sheeran was brought about by the heirs of the late music producer Ed Townsend, who is also said to have writers’ credit on the R&B/soul classic.
During Monday’s court proceedings, Sheeran lamented that he would take a step back from music should he be found guilty, as per the Daily Mail.
“If that happens, I’m done, I’m stopping,” the singer said.
He added, “I find it really insulting to devote my whole life to being a performer and a songwriter and have someone diminish it,” he lamented.
The Shape of You hitmaker also chastised the evidence presented by one musicologist, who used computer-generated technology in an attempt to highlight similarities between the two songs.
“If I can be honest, I think what he’s doing here is criminal,” Sheeran stated before questioning his credibility; “I don’t know why he’s allowed to be an expert.”
According to the PA news agency, Ed also shared that he has been receiving support from other songwriters for standing up against what is being seen as a threat to their work.
He previously won a lawsuit over accusations he and his co-writers unduly took adaptations from the 2015 single, ‘Oh Why’ by Sam Chokri and Ross O’Donoghue on Ed’s mega-hit, ‘Shape of You’.
The judge, in that case, ruled that neither Ed nor his writing team “deliberately nor subconsciously” copied a section of ‘Oh Why’ in the creation of the song.
