Grammy Award-winning producer Stephen ‘Di Genius’ McGregor wants less talk and more action in moving the music forward as he believes the continuous “state of the music” conversations need to end.
In an X (formerly Twitter) thread on Sunday, the super producer shared his thoughts about the relevance of these discussions adding that action is what’s needed instead of more talk.
“Convos won’t help our situation. We’ve been having these convos for over a decade and still nothing. I think for us action inspires action. And the way the convos are presented are more divisive than productive.”
Di Genius noted that the discussions, which ideally would have intended to address the issues hindering the progress of the music, seemingly create more confusion than solutions.
The “Bigship” Producer also chided the media’s role in the music’s current “state of affairs,” noting that talented acts don’t benefit from the level of attention that is placed on “something being wrong with the music.”
He also added that while some people may be satisfied with where the music is, the general lack of understanding of how it works, makes the “music is dead” concept – a recurring topic without tangible results while responding to a user.
McGregor, who himself was reportedly initially scrutinised about the sound of his productions, shared that there is an audience for everything as he encouraged creatives to hone their craft even if it goes against conventional presentations.
Stephen ‘Di Genius’ McGregor is one of the premier music producers to emerge from Jamaica and is credited with inspiring a production shift for Dancehall music in the mid-2010’s. The talented musician has worked with several Industry titans locally and internationally such as Sean Paul, Drake, Fench Montana, John Legend,Koffee to name a few.
He was also credited with two projects on the Spider man into the Spiderverse soundtrack- “Flip A Switch” by Raye and Coi Leray and “Infamous” by “Myke Towers” and “Shenseea”.
