Deadly landslide claims 104 lives in Petropolis, Brazil

Brazilian officials are reporting that at least 104 people have died as a result of massive landslides and flooding in the Brazilian city of Petropolis.

The city which is located in the mountains north of Rio de Janeiro was hit by torrential rainfall.

On Tuesday night, a record 258.8 millimeters of rainfall fell in less than six hours, causing 200 landslides in various places including the residential area of Alto de la Sierra. 

Due to the magnitude and quantity of the landslides, local authorities expect to see an increase in the number of deaths as many people have yet to be located.

“Oficina mountain was the most affected area, a large landslide hit over 80 houses around Tereza Street, a commercial area near downtown,” local outlet Diario do Poder reported. 

Reports surfacing also speak to severe damage in areas such as 24 de mile, Caxambu, Sargento, Boening, Moinho Preto, Vila Felipe and Vila Militar. 

In addition to the landslides in the city’s upper areas, the rains caused rivers to overflow and devastated everything in their path. 

Meanwhile, Petropolis Mayor Rubens Bolempo has declared three days of mourning along with the state of public calamity in order to speed up the rescue work.
