Manchester City maintained their journey toward a historic treble after dismissing rivals Manchester United 2-1 in the first-ever Manchester Derby FA Cup final at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Both Clubs were vying for their second silverware of the season in addition to the bragging rights of winning the first-ever FA Cup Final derby win.

It didn’t take long for the excitement to translate into a result with the first goal being scored seconds after kickoff.

The referee’s whistle had barely sounded for the start of the game before it signaled the first goal, as City’s Ikay Gündogan struck after just 13 seconds to shock the United massive into silence.

The German volleyed a powerful shot on top of the 18-year box, following a Kevin DeBruyne header which left Man U’s custodian David DeGea rooted in his stance as he watched his net become disturbed by the goal to give the ‘Cityzens’ the early lead

United took a while to recover from that initial shock before finding a bit of composure and was able to pressure City later in the half.

That pressure paid dividends in the 33rd minute, as Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty to level the encounter before the break.

It however didn’t take long for City to recapture the lead as the Gündogan /DeBruyne teamed up once more in the second half.

In an almost identical position outside United’s box, Gündogan produced another one-timer from a DeBruyne cross, which left the outstretched DeGea beaten at his near post and forced to again retrieve the ball from his own net after 51 minutes.

Despite the chances from both teams to add more goals, the score remained unchanged after 90 minutes to confirm another derby win for Pep Guadiola’s men and more importantly, a second title this season.

The Premiere League champions will now aim for the hattrick when they face Inter Milan in the Champions League Finals on June 10.
